When I learned that Maiden were to play their thirtieth concert in Poland, including their second at the prestigious PGE National Stadium, I knew only one thing: I had to be there. The band announced a special, incredibly spectacular tour celebrating 50 years of the band that defined modern heavy metal. There couldn't be a better opportunity to witness the magic of this famous band live. Besides, like all good things, Maiden's career will surely end someday, and there's no denying that it will be sooner rather than later.

 ANNOUNCEMENTS

 Steve Harris, Bruce Dickinson, and manager Rod Smallwood made no secret from the very beginning that the upcoming tour would be something absolutely unique, something that would elevate the Iron Maiden concert experience to a completely new level. Harris's band is are true titans of the stage. It's worth mentioning that between 1980 and 2026, the band played 130 concerts in Scandinavia alone, to nearly 3.8 million spectators, which probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Iron Maiden, 40 years ago, erected a monument to themselves, sculpting a giant titled Live After Death (1985) – an absolute benchmark, a blueprint for all artists regarding what a classic heavy metal live album should be. It was the British who set the standard for modern metal. Given this, any promises regarding the upcoming tour might seem exaggerated. It's no surprise, as Iron Maiden had accustomed audiences to high standards of concert presentation for decades, but this time, fans were about to experience something extra. Furthermore, they had been warned that after a busy 2026 tour, the band would take a 12-month break from the stage. The year 2027 was supposed to be a respite of sorts, a time devoted to preparing a live album and a film from the La Defense Arena in Paris, commemorating the Run For Your Lives tour. 

TOUR

Run For Your Lives is a grand celebration of 50 years of the most prestigious band in heavy metal history. It's not just a selection of the most illustrious compositions that gave birth to the band's legend, but above all, a grand celebration using a stage set unlike any the band has ever presented. In a nutshell: suspended, multi-segment sound system, conceptual, illuminated set design, a three-tiered stage with catwalks and platforms, an interactive stage, seven large screens, including immersive ones, symmetrically arranged screens at the back of the stage, and screens embedded in the stage platforms. A huge immersive screen: 25 x 10 meters, music videos, films, animations, 3D graphics, AI-assisted immersive effects, and lighting built on multi-level ramps. One of the largest ramps in the band's history (25 meters long), lasers, massive ramps on the sides of the stage, searchlights around the stage and FOH stations. An immersive Big Eddie effect, AI holograms, walking Eddie Trooper 1, walking Eddie Killers. Tongues of flame, blasts, powerful pyrotechnics, projectors, phono flashes, searchlights, enclosed stage wings, a cinematic rotating 4K HD 3D scenery, costumes, a mask, a cape, outfits, a cage, a pilot cap, a cavalry uniform, and minimalist drums. This was a completely new level for the band! 135 tons (!) of equipment had to be suspended. Transporting this equipment required 15 to 25 trucks. It was no surprise, then, that the tour sold out in record time, attracting a huge crowd: 32 performances for over 1.4 million people. This isn't exactly standard for a heavy metal band, especially one that's been active for 50 years! Yet, Run For Your Lives is a tour that has already made history, showcasing the band's power, which has endured for decades. Celebrating half a century of activity is also a wonderful opportunity to recall everything that has made Iron Maiden the world's greatest heavy metal band, one of the greatest British bands in general, and one of the greatest live bands in rock history. The tour was intended to be a demonstration of the band's vitality and power, and that's exactly what it proved to be. 

REPERTOIRE

It was originally intended to be a selection from the band's first nine studio albums, their most legendary and most popular. These nine studio albums alone have sold over 90 million copies, a figure that is undoubtedly impressive. Unfortunately, during the 2025 concerts, no fragment of the album No Prayer For The Dying (1990) was missing. It was not well-liked by both fans and musicians and is considered one of the weakest in the band's catalog. However, doesn't at least one composition deserve to be performed live during the band's 50th anniversary tour? Let me remind you that "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter" is a massive killer and the band's only single to reach number one in the UK charts! Well, the band chose exactly as they saw fit, and we fans have to accept that choice. Personally, I think 2025 concert setlist is interesting. We have an excellent representation of the album Killers (1981), often omitted from such lists, a superb epic section represented by songs like Seventh Son and Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a review of other biggest hits from 1980-1992, and finally, less obvious tracks. Could it have been better? Yes, besides those above Bring Your Daughter, there wasn't a single completely surprising song, and the band has plenty of those. For formality's sake, here's the official set of the tour:

 CONCERT

To say that Maiden's 30th concert in Poland was highly anticipated would be an understatement. Tickets for the band have probably never sold out so quickly. It's worth noting that they weren't exactly cheap. As the audience filled the vast space of the PGE Narodowy Stadium, impressive animations displayed on multiple screens met our eyes. The AI-generated worlds were stunningly realistic, coming to life with each song, transporting the gathered fans to the Iron Maiden universe. We saw the streets of London, the Cart & Horses bar, the Paris skyline at night, and the grand opera house. During "The Number of the Beast," we encountered a collage of the most shocking scenes from pre-war horror films, embarked on a cruise on the Ancient Mariner's ship, and followed the fate of a convict played by Bruce (Hallowed Be Thy Name). At one point, an avatar of the artist's soul even appeared on stage. We were transported to the cell from the cover of Piece of Mind to face a gigantic version of Eddie, generated by immersive special effects, making the monster seem to be reaching for the people in the stadium. Finally, during the encore, we witnessed the aerial battle from the Aces High music video, before taking a trip in the massive time machine that transformed the stage at the end of Wasted Years. Much could be written about the gigantic pyrotechnics, lasers, Dickinson's costumes, and the mobile versions of Eddie that appeared on stage. The band perfected these elements of the show, and in 2025, they completely revitalized the show, which is now a top-tier visual experience. It's impossible to describe; it has to be seen, or better yet, experienced. It's worth it! But a concert is, above all, a live music presentation. So how did Iron Maiden fare after 50 years of playing? I have to admit, I haven't heard Harris' band in such good form in many, many years. Classical compositions gained new vigor, Bruce Dickinson confidently lifted them to the heavens, and the masterful work of the guitars and rhythm section made it seem as if these six Brits had rejuvenated themselves after more than 30 years. While the acoustic conditions at the PGE Stadium were a challenge, proving the claim that the venue was unsuitable for rock concerts, I could still hear the musicians' work quite well in the center of the stadium. I doubt it, as it was Simon Dawson who truly revitalized the band.

SIMON DAWSON

The band's new drummer was undoubtedly the biggest unknown. When Nicko McBrain left the band in December 2024, there was consternation among fans, with many claiming that no one would be able to replace the legendary drummer. The choice fell on a full-time musician at British Lion, who has worked on numerous studio projects, is experienced, and, most importantly, perfectly in tune with Steve Harris. And that's exactly what we got during the Warsaw show. It's been a long time since Iron Maiden sounded so energetic, rhythmic, and METAL. Dawson's style is, in many ways, something different from what Nicko proposed. There's less swing and subtle nuances here, and more pure technique, relentless impact, and unwavering precision. Indeed, his playing is reminiscent of what Clive Burr demonstrated long ago. Objectively speaking, such a change should have happened to the group a few years ago. I can't wait to see what the songs performed during The Future Past Tour would have sounded like if Simon Dawson had been the drummer. I only hope that Iron Maiden will record their next studio album (if it ever comes out) with a new drummer. Kudos for their excellent mastery of the material; the band's classic compositions are a tough nut to crack, even for a very experienced musician; in my opinion, everything turned out wonderfully.

AUDIENCE

The age range of the fans was impressive. Representatives of three generations, crowds of both older and very young fans, and there was a huge buzz. The PGE National Stadium, with its traditional stage setup at the back of the arena, can accommodate up to 70,000 spectators for concerts; I personally have no doubt that that's how many people were there. I had a brief conversation with a local security guard, who confirmed my observation, and Iron Maiden's court photographer, John McMurtire, included the same description in the photos from the event. The official reports reveal a complete statistical range: from over 50,000 to 60,000 fans, although there were reports of 72,500 spectators. Statistical variations aside, the massive crowd at Maiden's concert in Poland became a fact. On August 2, 2025, Iron Maiden gathered by far the largest audience at a Polish show, one of the largest ever gathered by a metal band for a solo performance in Poland. However, that's not the most important thing here. What was most impressive was the extraordinary level of audience engagement. Wonderful, choral singing, excellent interaction between the audience and the vocalist, who (as always) demonstrated a world-class performance of conducting a massive crowd. It's impossible to describe; it has to be seen and experienced. It's unparalleled!

OUTRO

Well, Iron Maiden proved that it's no coincidence that they are considered the greatest heavy metal band of all time. Their concerts are true rituals of mass destruction that can appeal to a wide range of audiences, not just die-hard fans of the genre. A magnificent spectacle that literally every rock fan should see, a spectacle that elevated metal to the status of audiovisual art. Bruce Dickinson, summing up the tour, is said to have said: "If you've seen it once, you can't help but come back for more!" It's hard to disagree. I'm already looking forward to the band's next visit to Poland, which likely won't happen before 2028. However (as always), it will be a superb musical feast that would be a shame not to attend.

Kiedy tylko dowiedziałem się, że Maideni mają zagrać swój trzydziesty koncert w Polsce, w tym drugi na prestiżowym Stadionie Narodowym PGE, wiedziałem tylko jedno – musiałem tam być. Zespół zapowiedział specjalną, niezwykle spektakularną trasę koncertową, związaną z obchodami 50-lat działalności formacji, która zdefiniowała współczesny heavy metal. Lepszej okazji do zobaczenia magii słynnej grupy na żywo nie mogło być. Z resztą, jak wszystko co dobre, tak i kariera Maidenów kiedyś się na pewno skończy i nie ma co ukrywać, iż będzie to raczej prędzej niż później.

ZAPOWIEDZI

Steve Harris, Bruce Dickinson i manager Rod Smallwood od samego początku nie ukrywali, iż nadchodząca trasa będzie czymś absolutnie unikatowym, czymś co przeniesie doświadczenie koncertowe Iron Maiden na kompletnie inny poziom. Zespół Harrisa to prawdziwi tytani scen. Warto wspomnieć, iż w latach 1980 – 2026 formacja zagrała w samej Skandynawii 130 koncertów dla niemal 3,8 mln widzów, co chyba nikogo nie powinno zbytnio dziwić. To właśnie Iron Maiden 40 lat temu wystawili sami sobie pomnik, rzeźbiąc giganta pod tytułem Live After Death (1985) – absolutny punkt odniesienia, blueprint dla wszystkich artystów odnośnie tego, jak powinien wyglądać klasyczny koncertowy album z gatunku heavy metal. To Brytyjczycy wyznaczyli wzorzec współczesnego metalu. Wobec powyższego, wszelkie obietnice dotyczące nadchodzącej trasy mogły wydawać się zbyt wyolbrzymione. Nic dziwnego, Iron Maiden od dekad przyzwyczaili publiczność do wysokich standardów prezentacji koncertowej, tym razem jednak fani mieli doświadczyć czegoś ekstra. Z resztą uprzedzono, iż po intensywnym koncertowo roku 2026, zespół weźmie 12 miesięcy urlopu od aktywności estradowej. Rok 2027 miał być swego rodzaju odpoczynkiem, czasem poświęconym na przygotowanie albumu koncertowego i filmu z paryskiej La Defense Arena, który upamiętniałby trasę Run For Your Lives.

TRASA

Run For Your Lives to wielkie świętowanie 50 lat najbardziej prestiżowego zespołu w historii heavy metalu. To nie tylko wybór najbardziej znamienitych kompozycji, które zrodziły legendę formacji, lecz ponad wszystko, wielka celebracja z użyciem oprawy jakiej ten zespół jak do tej pory nie zaprezentował. W kilku zdaniach: podwieszane, wielosegmentowe nagłośnienie, konceptualna, podświetlana scenografia, trójpoziomowa estrada z wybiegami i platformami, interaktywna scena, 7 telebimów także immersyjnych, symetrycznie ustawione ekrany w głębi sceny, ekrany wmontowane w podesty sceny. Ogromny ekran immersyjny: 25 x 10 m, teledyski, filmy, animacje, grafiki 3d, efekty immersyjne wspomagane przez AI, oświetlenie zbudowane na wielopoziomowych rampach. Jedna z największych ramp w historii grupy (25 m długości), lasery, potężne rampy po bokach estrady, szperacze wokół sceny i stanowiska FOH. Immersyjny efekt Big Eddie, hologramy AI, walking Eddie Trooper 1, walking Eddie Killers. Języki ognia, blasty, potężna pirotechnika, rzutniki, fonobłyski, szperacze, obudowane skrzydła sceny, filmowa rotacyjna sceneria 4K HD 3D, kostiumy, maska, peleryna, stroje, klatka, pilotka, mundur kawalerzysty, minimalistyczna perkusja. To był kompletnie nowy level dla zespołu! 135 ton (!) sprzętu do zawieszenia. Aby przewozić tę aparaturę potrzebnych było od 15 do 25 ciężarówek.

Nie mogło zatem nikogo dziwić, iż poszczególne koncerty trasy wyprzedawały się w rekordowym czasie, przyciągając ogromną rzeszę widzów: 32 występy dla ponad 1,4 mln widzów. Nie jest to standard dla grupy heavymetalowej, tym bardziej takiej, która działa już 50 lat! A jednak, Run For Your Lives to trasa, która już przeszła do historii grupy, pokazała jej potęgę, niezmiennie trwającą od kilku dekad. Obchody połowy stulecia aktywności, to jednocześnie znakomita okazja, aby przypomnieć wszystko to, co sprawiło, iż Iron Maiden to niezmiennie największy heavymetalowy zespół świata, jeden z największych brytyjskich w ogóle i jeden z najwspanialszych zespołów koncertowych w historii rocka. Trasa miała być demonstracją witalności i siły formacji, i dokładnie taką się okazała.

REPERTUAR

Z założenia miał to być wybór z pierwszych dziewięciu albumów studyjnych zespołu, tych najbardziej legendarnych i najpopularniejszych zarazem. Tylko te 9 albumów studyjnych sprzedano w ponad 90 mln kopii, to liczba która bezspornie musi robić wrażenie. Niestety, podczas koncertów 2025 roku zabrakło jakiegokolwiek fragmentu albumu No Prayer For The Dying (1990), niezbyt lubianego zarówno przez fanów jak i muzyków, uważanego za jeden z najsłabszych w katalogu grupy. Jednak czy choćby jedna kompozycja nie zasługuje na prezentację koncertową podczas jubileuszowej trasy związanej z 50 latami istnienia formacji? Przypomnę, iż Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter to potężny killer i jedyny singel zespołu, który dotarł na szczyt Brytyjskiej listy przebojów! Cóż, zespół wybrał dokładnie tak jak uważał, nam fanom pozostaje się z tym wyborem pogodzić. Osobiście uważam setlistę koncertów 2025 za interesującą. Mamy tutaj wyborną reprezentację albumu Killers (1981), często pomijanego w takich zestawieniach, doskonały dział epicki reprezentowany przez utwory Seventh Son oraz Rime of the Ancient Mariner, przegląd pozostałych, największych hitów z lat 1980 – 1992, w końcu utwory mniej oczywiste. Czy mogło być lepiej? Tak, oprócz wskazanego Bring Your Daughter zabrakło choćby jednego utworu kompletnie zaskakującego, a tych formacja ma mnóstwo. Dla porządku formalnego przedstawiam oficjalny set trasy:

KONCERT

Powiedzieć, że 30-ty koncert Maiden w Polsce był niezwykle oczekiwany, to jakby nie powiedzieć absolutnie niczego. Chyba nigdy przedtem bilety na występ formacji nie znikały aż tak szybko. Warto wspomnieć, iż nie należały one do najtańszych. Kiedy publiczność wypełniła szczelnie ogromną przestrzeń PGE Narodowego, naszym oczom ukazały się imponujące animacje wyświetlane na kilku ekranach. Wygenerowane przez AI światy oszałamiały realnością, ożywały wraz z każdym utworem, przenosząc zgromadzonych fanów do uniwersum Iron Maiden. Widzieliśmy ulice Londynu, bar Cart & Horses, panoramę Paryża w poświacie nocy, gmach ogromnej opery. Podczas The Number of the Beast mieliśmy do czynienia z collagem najbardziej wstrząsających scen z przedwojennych horrorów, wyruszyliśmy w rejs statkiem Sędziwego Marynarza, śledziliśmy losy skazańca, w rolę którego wcielił się Bruce (Hallowed Be Thy Name). W pewnym momencie na scenie pojawił się nawet awatar duszy artysty. Przenieśliśmy się do celi znanej z okładki Piece of Mind, by zmierzyć się z gigantyczną wersją Eddiego, wygenerowaną przez immersyjne efekty specjalne, tak iż monstrum wydawało się sięgać po osoby znajdujące się na stadionie. W końcu podczas bisów obserwowaliśmy bitwę powietrzną znaną z klipu do Aces High, by odbyć podróż ogromną machiną czasu, w którą przeobraziła się scena w finale Wasted Years. Dużo można by pisać o gigantycznej pirotechnice, laserach, strojach Dickinsona i mobilnych wersjach Eddiego, które pojawiły się na estradzie. Te elementy show zespół doprowadził do perfekcji, zaś w 2025 roku na dobre zrewitalizował show, które teraz pod względem wizualnym to absolutna ekstraklasa. Tego nie da się opisać, to trzeba zobaczyć a najlepiej przeżyć. Warto!

Jednak koncert to przede wszystkim prezentacja muzyki na żywo. Jak zatem wypadli Iron Maiden po 50 latach grania? Muszę przyznać, iż w tak dobrej formie nie słyszałem formacji Harrisa od wielu, wielu lat. Klasyczne kompozycje nabrały wigoru, Bruce Dickinson zdecydowanie unosił je pod nieboskłon, zaś mistrzowska praca gitar i sekcji rytmicznej pozwalały uwierzyć, iż oto sześciu Brytyjczyków odmłodniało po ponad 30 lat. Co prawda warunki akustyczne PGE dawały się wszystkim we znaki, dowodząc słuszności twierdzeniu, iż obiekt ten na rockowe koncerty się nie nadaje, jednak akurat w centrum płyty stadionu, mogłem usłyszeć efekt pracy muzyków zupełnie przyzwoicie. Nie wiem, czy osiągnięcie tak wspaniałych rezultatów gry zespołowej byłoby możliwe, gdyby nie zdecydowano się na zmianę perkusisty. Śmiem wątpić, bowiem to właśnie Simon Dawson zrewitalizował grupę na dobre.

SIMON DAWSON

Nowy perkusista zespołu był zdecydowanie największą niewiadomą. Kiedy w grudniu 2024 roku Nicko McBrain opuścił szeregi formacji, wśród fanów zapanowała konsternacja, a wielu twierdziło, iż nikt nie będzie w stanie zastąpić legendarnego perkusisty. Wybór padł na etatowego muzyka British Lion, pracującego z wieloma projektami w studio, człowieka doświadczonego a co najważniejsze, idealnie zgranego ze Stevem Harrisem. I to właśnie dostaliśmy podczas warszawskiego show. Już dawno Iron Maiden nie brzmieli tak energetycznie, rytmicznie i METALOWO. Styl Dawsona to w wielu aspektach coś innego, od tego co proponował Nicko. Mniej tu swingu i smaczków a więcej czystej techniki, nieubłaganego uderzenia i niezachwianej precyzji. Rzeczywiście, przypomina on swą grą to, co prezentował dawno temu Clive Burr. Obiektywnie rzecz biorąc, taka zmiana powinna przydarzyć się grupie już kilka lat temu. Nawet nie chcę sobie wyobrażać tego, jak brzmiałyby kompozycje wykonywane podczas The Future Past Tour, gdyby perkusistą był Simon Dawson. Mam tylko nadzieję, iż kolejny album studyjny (o ile się ukaże) Iron Maiden zrealizują już z nowym perkusistą. Brawo za doskonałe opanowanie materiału, klasyczne kompozycje zespołu to ciężki orzech do zgryzienia nawet dla bardzo doświadczonego muzyka, moim zdaniem wszystko wypadło wspaniale.

PUBLICZNOŚĆ

Przekrój wiekowy fanów, to coś, co mogło zaimponować. Przedstawiciele trzech pokoleń, rzesze zarówno starszych jak i bardzo młodych fanów, ogromne poruszenie. Stadion PGE Narodowy na koncerty z tradycyjnym ustawieniem estrady w głębi płyty, jest w stanie pomieścić nawet 70 tys. widzów, osobiście nie mam wątpliwości, iż tyle osób tam było. Odbyłem krótką konwersację z lokalnym pracownikiem ochrony, który potwierdził moje spostrzeżenie, to samo w opisie zdjęć z wydarzenia umieścił nadworny fotograf Ironów – John McMurtire. Cóż, w oficjalnych raportach mamy pełny rozrzut statystyczny: od ponad 50 do 60 tys. fanów, choć zdarzały się i takie relacje, w których pojawiało się 72500 widzów. Abstrahując od statystycznych wariacji, gigantyczne morze ludzi na koncercie Maiden w Polsce stało się faktem. 2 sierpnia 2025 roku, Ironi zgromadzili zdecydowanie największą publiczność na polskim show, jedną z największych jakie zgromadził zespół metalowy na indywidualnym występie nad Wisłą. Jednak nie to jest tutaj najistotniejsze. Największe wrażenie robił nadzwyczajny poziom zaangażowania widowni w przebieg koncertu. Wspaniałe, chóralne śpiewy, znakomita interakcja na linii widownia – wokalista, który (jak zawsze) dał pokaz mistrzostwa świata w dyrygowaniu ogromnym tłumem. Tego nie da się opisać, to trzeba zobaczyć i doświadczyć. Nie ma sobie równych!

OUTRO

Cóż, Iron Maiden udowodnili, iż nieprzypadkowo uważani są za największy zespół heavymetalowy wszech czasów. Ich koncerty to prawdziwe rytuały mocy masowego rażenia, które mogą podobać się różnym odbiorcom, nie tylko zdeklarowanym wielbicielom gatunku.
