The relationship between Iron Maiden and the United States is complicated and bittersweet. The band, which never followed trends, did not try to adapt to the prevailing fashion, ignored the media - did not have an easy start on the extremely commercialized market there. In addition, the band's huge catalog of records was distributed in the States by various record labels, including: Capitol Records, Epic, CMC, BMG, Legacy, Sony Portrait, Sony, CBS, UMe, Metal-IS, Sanctuary Records, to mention the most important ones. In the period 1980-1990 the group was represented by Capitol Records, which at that time was a branch of the British giant EMI. All of the band's albums released in the decade 1980-1990 easily gained gold and platinum certificates, and the band was famous in the States. The next labels released the current catalog and reissued classic titles starting in 1990, the interest in classic metal in the USA significantly waned, and it was not the LPs but the numerous video materials (VHS/DVD) published by the group in the following decades that enjoyed considerable success in America, easily reaching platinum. Well, the official certificates awarded to the band for the first 9 albums may not make an appropriate impression compared to the achievements in other countries, however, in order to estimate the ACTUAL ROTATION of individual releases, it is necessary to sum up the data from the above-mentioned record labels, obtained over the decades. Nowadays, this process is possible, especially since the data is published from time to time, thanks to the facilities of Sound Scan. It is estimated that all the albums of the group have sold around 20 million copies in the USA. Maybe in relation to the huge market there and the total circulation of Maiden albums in the world (over 130 million!!!) it is not a staggering number, but Maiden as an independent group definitely achieved success in America. Time has shown that the audience in the USA prefers to see the band live and on video than listening to their music from albums.
